Keep Your Kids Minds Active in Summer Months

Finally, the summer is in motion. The days are longer, more relaxed, school structure is lifted. Does this mean your kids should have a “brain break”? Yes, they should! However, it is important to be mindful of summer academic regression. Being out of school for 10-11 weeks will create an academic set back and there are easy ways to keep your child steady during summer months.

Here are some helpful summer tips to minimize this regression while still maintaining their desired (and deserved) summer break:

1. Get all required summer work provided by your child’s school completed by the end of July at the latest if possible.

2. Take time daily to play games that teach facts, figures and history.

3. Have your children pick out reading for enjoyment books and magazines. Topics that interest them, not just what was required by the school. Let them browse genres of interest and show them it’s not just a chore.

4. Pick countries and places of interest and have them research these places and discus their findings at dinner. Maybe ask that they have a fun fact prepared!

5. Use globes and maps of the states and world to allow your children to see and touch where places are and how far they from others. Let them hold the world in their hands!
